Elevated Railways

Riyadh Metro, Lines 1 & 2 – Stations & Viaducts

Design for the contractor of all of the elevated stations and viaducts on Lines 1 & 2 – a total viaduct length of approximately 18km – together with 10 elevated stations.  The viaducts are precast segmental with spans up to 70m, erected by a combination of gantries and for the longer spans by balanced cantilever using cranes.  The stations are supported on the viaduct columns and incorporate basements used as plant rooms, and mezzanines below the platforms for public and back of house facilities.  The stations are enclosed in a grid shell canopy.

Dubai Metro Viaducts and Elevated Stations

Design for the contactor of 25no. three span precast segmental viaducts with spans up to 72m and 21 fully elevated stations. The form of the viaduct was unusual consisting of a post-tensioned pre-cast segmental through girder, which was combined with a box girder for the longer spans which required a detailed 3-D finite element analysis to investigate the shear lag effects and contribution to the shear capacity of the through girder and the box girder.

Express Rail Link – Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Design for the contractor of 37 bridges for a 56km new railway extending from downtown Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Lumpur International Airport at Sepang. The bridges varied from simple cast in-situ over bridges to substantial precast prestressed concrete beam viaducts.

STAR Light Rail Viaducts, Kuala Lumpur

Design of STAR light rail transit system viaducts for the promoter and contractor. The design, using precast segments launched by a travelling gantry, enabled the STAR line to weave its way through the heart of KL at a rate of up to 4 spans per week. Slender piers, where possible on single piles, minimised the disruption to the heavy city traffic and below ground services. The first phase viaduct of 2.6km also supported the main parts of four elevated city centre stations along its length.

Putra Light Rail Viaducts, Kuala Lumpur

Construction technology, temporary works design, independent checking and investigation into gantry failure for this 22km precast segmental viaduct.
